About the role
The Gender Officer will support the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) by advancing gender mainstreaming, Women, Peace and Security (WPS) and protection initiatives across civilian, police and military components. Reporting to the Senior Gender Officer, the incumbent will contribute to the Mission’s mandate of promoting gender equality in a complex, high‑risk environment.
Key responsibilities
- Implement AU and UN gender equality policies and the WPS agenda within the Mission.
- Integrate gender perspectives into planning, operations, policies, programmes and activities.
- Develop and deliver gender‑related training, awareness sessions and capacity‑building initiatives for staff and partners.
- Monitor, report and analyse gender mainstreaming and conflict‑related gender issues.
- Coordinate with government bodies, civil‑society organisations, women’s groups, UN entities and other stakeholders on gender matters.
- Support initiatives that promote women’s participation, protection and inclusion in peace, stabilization and recovery processes.
Required profile
- Relevant academic background in gender studies, international relations, peace and security or a related field.
- Experience working on gender mainstreaming, WPS or protection in humanitarian or peace‑building contexts.
- Ability to operate effectively in high‑risk, multi‑stakeholder environments.
- Strong analytical, reporting and coordination skills.
