Chairman – Senior Leadership Role

About the role

The Chairman is a full‑time, on‑site senior leadership position at the Somali Youth Development Organisation (SYDO) in Mogadishu. Reporting to the board, the Chairman guides strategic direction, ensures robust governance, and supports the executive team in delivering youth‑focused programs.

Key responsibilities

• Lead and facilitate board meetings, setting agendas and ensuring effective decision‑making.
• Oversee development and implementation of organisational policies, risk management and compliance frameworks.
• Represent SYDO with government agencies, donors, partners and community stakeholders.
• Advocate for youth development priorities at local and national levels.
• Review program performance, budgets and financial oversight to ensure alignment with mission.
• Promote ethical standards, gender equality and inclusive practices across the organisation.
• Mentor senior staff, foster collaboration within the board and secure resources and partnerships.

Required profile

• Proven leadership experience in nonprofit, community development or youth‑focused organisations.
• Strong track record in governance, strategic oversight and stakeholder engagement.
• Experience managing policy development, financial oversight, risk and regulatory compliance.
• Excellent communication, negotiation and public representation skills.
• Commitment to gender equality, youth empowerment and inclusive decision‑making.
• Bachelor’s degree in social sciences, public administration, law, development studies or related field; advanced degree or equivalent experience is an asset.
• Fluency in Somali and working proficiency in English.
