Senior Civil Affairs Officer – African Union Mission in Somalia

About the role

The Senior Civil Affairs Officer supports the implementation of civil affairs activities for the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM). Reporting to the Principal Civil Affairs Officer, the incumbent works in a high‑risk environment to promote conflict management, community engagement and local governance.

Key responsibilities

• Implement and coordinate civil affairs initiatives aligned with the AUSSOM mandate and stabilization priorities.
• Facilitate conflict prevention, reconciliation and social cohesion programmes at national and sub‑national levels.
• Liaise with host authorities, civil society organisations, community leaders and other mission components to ensure effective coordination.
• Support local governance structures and community‑stabilisation projects that build dialogue and confidence among affected populations.
• Monitor, report and contribute to planning processes for civil affairs activities.

Required profile

• Relevant higher education in political science, international relations, peace and security or a related field.
• Significant experience in civil affairs, conflict management or community engagement within complex environments.
• Proven ability to work with diverse stakeholders, including government officials and NGOs.
• Strong analytical and reporting skills, with fluency in English.
