Associate Communications Officer

About the role

The Associate Communications Officer works in the United Nations Resident Coordination Office (RCO) in Mogadishu, Somalia, under the direct supervision of the Head of the Resident Coordinator Office. The role supports the Resident Coordinator System in delivering on the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals, maintaining relationships with management, colleagues, external partners, media and civil society, and supporting reporting, crisis management and communications training.

Key responsibilities

• Gather insights from media monitoring (traditional, social and digital) to inform communications strategy
• Contribute to communications strategies, messaging, media relations and media lines, including in crises
• Plan and coordinate press conferences, briefings and media events, and act as spokesperson when required
• Develop content, campaigns and creative materials such as press releases, web stories, reports and infographics
• Create content for UN and community radio channels and podcasts
• Support outreach, advocacy and strategic communications partnerships with internal and external stakeholders
• Contribute to policy, guidance and training on strategic communications, and to reporting to governmental bodies
• Analyse communications data and trends, and monitor the performance of communications approaches

Required profile

• Advanced university degree (Master's or equivalent) in communication, journalism, international relations, digital communications or a related field; a first-level degree plus two years of qualifying experience may be accepted
• At least two years of progressively responsible experience developing and implementing communications strategies
• Knowledge of strategic communications principles and practices; knowledge of digital media platforms, data analytics and research skills are desirable
• English at UN Level III reading, writing and listening, and UN Level III speaking; Somali at UN Level III in all four skills
• Fixed-term appointment of one year, open to Somalis only
