Data Specialist (Fixed-Term, 1 Year)

About the role

The Data Specialist works in the Office of the United Nations Resident Coordinator (Head RCO) in Mogadishu, Somalia, reporting to the Head of the Resident Coordinator's Office/Team Leader. The role develops and implements databases, data collection systems and data analytics, and works with data engineers, data scientists, data owners and subject matter experts, as well as with UN funds, programmes, consultants and NGOs. The position is fixed term for one year.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and implement databases, data collection systems, data analytics and quality control strategies
• Analyze trends and patterns in structured and unstructured data using statistical methods
• Create reports, dashboards and data visualizations to communicate findings to management
• Document requirements, methodology and standards, and lead the production of data products such as reports and newsletters
• Collaborate with data engineers and data scientists to improve data flows and quality
• Build capacity through training and workshops, and supervise colleagues in data-centric roles
• Support projects and the monitoring, evaluation and learning cycle with data analysis and validation
• Identify gaps in the national statistical system and recommend coordinated UN responses, including big-data pilots, citizen-generated data and geospatial solutions

Required profile

• Advanced university degree (Master's or equivalent) in computer science, data science, statistics, economics or social sciences, or a Bachelor's degree plus two years of qualifying experience
• At least five years of progressively responsible experience turning business requirements into technical solutions
• English and Somali at UN Level III reading, writing and listening, and UN Level II speaking
• Open to Somalia nationals only; relocation costs borne by the candidate if hired outside Somalia

• Data validation and quality assurance of analysis outputs
• Strategic support to research, data analysis, knowledge management or project/programme management in development cooperation (desirable)
