Driver G2 - Baidoa

About the role

The Driver position in WFP Somalia ensures safe, reliable and timely transport that supports programme delivery and operational effectiveness. Based in Baidoa, under the overall supervision of the Finance & Management Services Associate, drivers move staff, transport goods and documents and keep vehicles in line with WFP standards. The post is open to qualified internal Somali national candidates only.

Key responsibilities

• Transport authorised personnel, translating basic conversations between them and the local language, and deliver items and commodities along authorised routes following UN safety and security rules.
• Meet officials and visitors at airports or entry points and help with visa and customs formalities.
• Keep vehicle logbooks accurate and report daily to the supervisor on mechanical status, and keep the vehicle clean, maintained on time and fully equipped with travel authorisations and supplies.
• Follow field delivery rules and report accidents or problems immediately to the supervisor.
• When needed, carry out basic office tasks such as filing, photocopying, storing items, mailing and paying office bills.

Required profile

• Secondary school education.
• Formal driver training, a valid driver's licence and experience of at least two years as a driver, preferably in an international organisation, embassy or UN system, with a safe driving record.
• Experience driving vans, trucks and other motorised vehicles; defensive driving experience is desirable.
• Proficiency in spoken and written English and Somali.
• Knowledge of driving rules, chauffeur protocol, local roads and waterways, vehicle loading capacity, safety standards and equipment, and basic first aid.

Required skills

• Ability to read and interpret safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals.
• Use of radio, email, telephone and other applications.
• Assessing vehicles for mechanical fitness and minor repairs.
• Client-oriented approach, responsibility, courtesy and tact.
