Protection and Human Rights Officer – AU Support Mission in Somalia

About the role

The Protection and Human Rights Officer will support the Senior Protection and Human Rights Officer in implementing protection and human‑rights activities for the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM). Working in a high‑risk environment, the officer will contribute to monitoring, reporting and analysis of civilian protection and human‑rights concerns across the mission area.

Key responsibilities

• Monitor, document and analyse protection and human‑rights incidents within the mission’s area of operation.
• Prepare timely reports and briefings for mission leadership, host authorities and external partners.
• Coordinate with mission components, local authorities, civil‑society organisations and other stakeholders on protection‑related matters.
• Promote awareness of protection and human‑rights principles among mission staff and partners.
• Support liaison, reporting mechanisms and follow‑up actions on protection initiatives.

Required profile

• Relevant academic background in human rights, international law, political science, peace and security or a related field.
• Experience working in conflict‑affected or humanitarian settings, preferably with UN or regional organisations.
• Strong analytical and reporting skills, with ability to work under pressure.
• Excellent communication and coordination abilities, including interaction with diverse stakeholders.

Required skills

• Proficiency in monitoring and documentation methodologies for protection and human‑rights issues.
• Ability to produce clear, concise written reports and briefings.
• Familiarity with protection‑related legal frameworks and standards.
