Job description

About the role

The Botany Specialist will work full‑time from Mogadishu, combining field, office and remote work to conduct botanical surveys and assessments in dryland ecosystems. The role supports climate‑smart agriculture, natural resource management and community‑led resilience programmes.

Key responsibilities

  • Design and implement plant‑related research projects in dryland environments.
  • Conduct botanical surveys, document plant species and analyse vegetation patterns.
  • Collect, manage and analyse field data, including basic statistical analysis.
  • Prepare technical reports, guidance documents and training materials for agropastoral communities and professionals.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to integrate botanical insights into climate‑smart agriculture, restoration and resilience initiatives.
  • Support proposal development, stakeholder engagement and dissemination of findings through workshops, presentations and publications.

Required profile

  • Strong foundation in botany, plant ecology or related fields, with experience in dryland or arid ecosystems.
  • Proficiency in field research methods such as plant identification, ecological surveys and data collection.
  • Experience applying botanical knowledge to climate‑smart agriculture, rangeland management or ecosystem restoration in drought‑affected regions.
  • Ability to produce clear technical reports, research summaries and training materials for diverse audiences.
  • Competence with digital tools for data management, mapping and documentation (e.g., spreadsheets, basic GIS, mobile data‑collection apps).
  • Master’s degree in Botany or a related discipline.
