Security Officer (Mogadishu)

About the role

The United Nations Support Office in Somalia (UNSOS) is looking for a Security Officer based in Mogadishu. The position falls under the United Nations Department of Safety and Security (UNDSS) and reports to the Chief Security Officer through the Supervisor of the Security Investigation Unit. It is a full-time, temporary position available until 30 June 2027.

Key responsibilities

• Assist the Chief Security Officer or Area Security Coordinator in supervising a Security Unit and develop and monitor its security contingency plans
• Assess local security conditions, advise UN personnel and eligible dependents, and serve on the Security Cell
• Evaluate air, land and sea evacuation capability, run evacuation exercises and coordinate a 24-hour Emergency Response System
• Maintain fire prevention devices, fire-fighting equipment, fire evacuation plans and fire drills
• Inspect facilities, manage the guard force, set up a warden system and act as Duty Officer within the Security Section
• Investigate security incidents, conduct interviews and fact-finding, and prepare incident and investigation reports
• Contribute to protective services planning for Senior UN Officials, draft statements of requirement for security equipment and inspect security equipment
• Coordinate identity cards, background checks and entry controls, and advise and train staff on security matters

Required profile

• High school diploma or equivalent
• At least 8 years of progressively responsible experience in military, police, security management or analysis, including at least 2 years at the international level and 1 year in a conflict or post-conflict environment
• Experience in security investigations is desirable
• English at UN Level II (reading, writing, listening and speaking); French is the other working language of the Secretariat
• Applicants for Field Service positions cannot hold the nationality of the host country
