Fire Safety Officer

About the role

The Fire Safety Officer will support UNSOS in safeguarding personnel, facilities and assets by managing fire safety operations, coordinating emergency response and ensuring compliance with international fire safety standards. This is a three‑month consultancy based in Mogadishu.

Key responsibilities

• Assist the Head of Fire Safety Unit in supervising all fire safety activities.
• Liaise with host‑government fire, disaster relief and emergency services.
• Manage a 24/7 fire service capable of responding to fires, vehicle accidents, HAZMAT spills and other emergencies.
• Draft, update and implement Fire Safety and Emergency Evacuation Plans; coordinate drills and training.
• Conduct regular fire risk assessments and inspections, reporting gaps and recommending corrective actions.
• Evaluate fire detection and alarm systems (FDAS) and oversee technical specifications for equipment and PPE.
• Maintain and supervise a functional Fire Warden System across regional offices.

Required profile

• High school diploma or equivalent technical/vocational certificate.
• Minimum eight years of progressive experience in a public fire service, including at least five years in a supervisory fire‑safety role.
• Certificate from a fire college, brigade school or fire‑safety training centre.
• Certifications in technical fire protection, rescue operations, basic hazardous‑materials handling and use/maintenance of self‑contained breathing apparatus.
