Principal Security Adviser

About the role

The Department of Safety and Security (UNDSS) seeks a Principal Security Adviser to lead security risk management and operational planning for United Nations programmes in Somalia. Based in Mogadishu, you will support the Designated Official and the Security Management Team, ensuring the safety of personnel, assets and operations in a high‑risk environment.

Key responsibilities

• Advise the Designated Official and Security Management Team on all security matters for UN staff, dependents and premises.
• Lead the development, implementation and review of the Security Risk Management (SRM) process and related security measures.
• Provide situational awareness, early warning and analysis of emerging threats.
• Coordinate security operations across Somalia, applying the UN Results Chain framework.
• Ensure compliance with UNSMS policies, guidelines and residential security standards.

Required profile

• Extensive experience in security risk management, preferably in complex or crisis environments.
• Proven ability to advise senior officials and lead multidisciplinary security teams.
• Strong analytical skills with the capacity to interpret multi‑dimensional threats.
• Excellent communication and coordination abilities.
