Security Coordination Officer

About the role

The United Nations Support Office in Somalia (UNSOS) in Mogadishu is looking for a Security Coordination Officer to support the implementation and oversight of the UN security management system. Reporting to the Deputy Principal Security Adviser, the incumbent will work closely with the Principal Security Adviser and the Mission’s senior leadership.

Key responsibilities

• Review, develop, and update security plans for the Mission, ensuring they are actionable and aligned with UN policies.
• Serve as Chief of the Security Section when required and provide senior supervision to security staff.
• Advise the Head of Mission on all security matters and contribute to policy development.
• Maintain communication lines with security focal points of other UN agencies, peacekeeping missions, and local authorities.
• Participate in security management teams to plan, implement, and evaluate security operations.
• Monitor local security conditions, identify threats, and recommend preventative measures.
• Establish and maintain air, land, and sea evacuation capabilities, including logistics and fuel supply.
• Oversee physical security measures such as barriers, identity‑card issuance, background checks, and entry controls.
• Assess fire safety measures and coordinate training on residential security devices.
• Coordinate with local authorities and international bodies (e.g., Red Cross) for disaster response.
• Ensure emergency communication systems are functional and arrange repairs as needed.

Required profile

• Proven experience in security coordination or management, preferably within an international organization.
• Strong knowledge of UN security policies and procedures.
• Ability to analyse security threats and provide clear, actionable advice.
• Excellent communication and liaison skills with multiple stakeholders.
• Experience in planning and executing evacuation and emergency response operations.
